About this event
Most of you have probably seen the Oppenheimer film from 2023, which recounts the creation of the atomic bomb that helped to end World War 2. We are fortunate to live within driving distance of the site of that history in Los Alamos. The Roadrunner Region PCA has planned an outing to walk in the footsteps of the early scientists and learn about where they lived and how they worked. Two groups of drivers, one from Albuquerque and one from Santa Fe, will do a morning drive-out Thursday, March 27, meeting in Los Alamos to tour the Los Alamos Historical Society’s History Museum and significant sites like the Fuller Lodge and Bathtub Row from the Oppenheimer era. We are fortunate to have professional guides for these sites, Georgia and Gerry Strickfaden, to narrate our tour. The group will then go to the Bradbury Science Museum, which is the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s official museum, where we will have time to wander at our own pace through the newly renovated exhibits recounting how the bomb was created. We will also see exhibits about other science and research conducted at the Laboratory. Following the tours, we will meet at the Blue Window Bistro for a tasty late lunch.
Albuquerque group will gather at the Home Depot parking lot on Route 550 at 8:30 AM to sign insurance waivers. They will leave promptly at 9:00. Roland Wiele will be leading.
Santa Fe group will gather at the DeVargas Mall, across from Home Goods at 10:00 AM to sign waivers. Leave promptly at 10:15. Terry Morgan will be leading the group.
11:00 Parking in Los Alamos is on the NW corner of Central and 15th Street. If that is full, go to the lot on the SW corner. Both are across from the Bradbury Museum. If you still can’t find parking, go to the lot just north of the Police Department of Central next to the park. Our cars will stay there, while we walk to the Fuller Lodgewhere the 11:45 walking tour will begin.
